As students across New York return to school sports, parents and coaches should remember that safety goes beyond helmets and pads. The U.S. Center for SafeSport offers tools to help adults prevent abuse and spot warning signs.

Resources for New York Parents

SafeSport has online courses for families. The lessons explain how families can protect young athletes. Other resources teach parents how to tell the difference between proper coaching and abuse. Families can also learn about grooming, which happens when someone builds trust to harm or control a child.

Help for Coaches

Coaches can find tips for building a positive team. SafeSport offers information about bullying and how coaches should respond. Another guide explains what to do when an athlete reports abuse, neglect, or harmful behavior.

Check the SafeSport Database

New York parents can search SafeSport’s Centralized Disciplinary Database. It lists people banned or restricted from sports connected to the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Movement. The database is updated as changes happen.

How to Report a Concern

Anyone who knows about or suspects abuse involving someone in the Olympic and Paralympic Movement can report it to SafeSport. Reports can be made by calling 833-587-7233. The line is staffed from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern. Messages may be left after hours.
