Portion of Route 17 Named for Fallen D.O.T. Worker Dennis “Matt” Howe
A section of State Route 17 is renamed in honor of a New York State Department of Transportation employee who was killed at the site.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo August 9 signed legislation designating a portion of the Southern Tier Expressway in the Town of Nichols as the Dennis “Matt” Howe Memorial Highway

Howe was part of a DOT crew working along the side of the road March 13 when a tractor trailer hit the maintenance vehicle that had its lights flashing, fatally injuring the Candor man. Howe died at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre March 18.
37-year-old tractor trailer driver, Lawrence Faucett of Ulster, Pennsylvania was accused of violating New York’s Move Over Law and was ticketed for moving from a lane unsafely.
