Owego Restaurateur Detained by ICE, Community Rallies to Help
Roger Wang, well known in Owego as the owner of Kam Fung Restaurant, recently found himself in a tough spot. On his way to a crucial appointment to finalize his green card application, he was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers. Now, Roger is in ICE custody, and the future of his detainment remains unclear.
A Life Built Over Decades
Roger has called the United States home since 1992, living in Owego and running his restaurant since 1996. Over those 33 years, he has become a respected member of the community. According to a GoFundMe for Roger, he has diligently followed ICE’s requirements since 2012, with the understanding that after 12 years of monitoring, he would be granted his green card. Organizers say that his life story is marked by courage, he left Communist China to escape political persecution following the unrest around the Tiananmen Square protests.
More Than a Business Owner
Beyond his restaurant, Roger is deeply involved in his community. He actively participates in the Owego Nazarene Church and volunteers regularly, delivering meals to homebound residents through Tioga Opportunities Inc. He manages to keep his restaurant running seven days a week while giving back in these meaningful ways. Many in Owego know Roger as a kind and caring person whose heart extends beyond his business.

A Community Comes Together
Roger’s current situation has inspired a GoFundMe campaign aimed at helping him through this difficult time. The funds raised will go toward securing his release, covering legal fees, and supporting his restaurant during his absence. The exact cost of bail is still unknown, but the campaign serves as a vital resource for Roger and his family as they navigate this uncertainty.

A Call for Support
The campaign message, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” calls on the spirit of community and solidarity. It reminds everyone how important it is to support one another, especially when someone is vulnerable. The GoFundMe points out that Roger is a valued member of the Owego community, and now he needs that community’s help. Those who know him or simply want to help are encouraged to donate generously and keep Roger in their thoughts and prayers.
