One year ago, on December 16, 2020, Broome County Executive Jason Garnar declared a State of Emergency banning unnecessary travel since the forecast called for high winds and a potential of 20 inches of snow.  The region, instead, posted a record-breaking 40 inches of snow that crippled travel for several days.

The National Weather Service on Dec. 15 cautioned Winter Storm Gail could bring over 7 inches of snow then on the 16th, the winter storm warning was issued but still with projected snow totals far below what ended up falling.

One of the most memorable stories coming out of the storm was the rescue of a Candor man who was trapped in his snow-encased car for hours.

Tioga County Emergency Dispatchers struggled to try to locate 58-year-old Kevin Kresen as he made repeated calls for help but could not give an accurate location to authorities.  New York State Police Sergeant Jason Cawley was among those responding to the area of Route 17-C in Campville to try to find the stranded motorist and started digging in a pile of snow near a mailbox to try to read the address when he hit something hard and found Kresen’s car.

Kresen, who had been trapped for over 10 hours, was treated for hypothermia and frost bite.

Another big story was the collapse under the weight of the snow of the Greater Binghamton Sports Complex’s giant inflated dome.  The complex last month suffered another blow when the steel structure being constructed to replace the old dome collapsed in high wind.
