In anticipation of the severe winter weather expected to impact the Southern Tier tonight, New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Broome County Executive Jason Garnar will be declaring a State of Emergency for Broome County.

The National Weather Service in Binghamton is keeping a close watch on a winter storm that is expected to bring 8 to 18 inches of heavy, wet snow to the Southern Tier with the worst of the storm anticipated to arrive during the overnight hours into Tuesday morning.

Governor Hochul announced the State of Emergency for Broome County in order to deploy state agency personnel and to activate the New York National Guard to help in any way needed following the storm as the threat is high for widespread power outages and dangerous travel conditions.

In conjunction with the Broome County State of Emergency, a travel advisory will also be issued by Broome County Executive Jason Garnar. New York Governor Kathy Hochul said that travel should be restricted particularly on Tuesday when visibility conditions are expected to be at their worst.

The Broome County travel advisory states that there is to be no unnecessary travel after 8:00 p.m. on Monday, March 13. The only allowable travel is travel that is work-related and emergency travel.

Broome County has also announced that its offices will be closed on Tuesday, March 14, and are scheduled to reopen on Tuesday, March 15.

As of now, Broome County Transit and the Greater Binghamton Airport are scheduled to operate on a regular schedule on Tuesday, March 15. On Tuesday, the Broome County Landfill will be closed to the public tomorrow however, it will remain open to haulers.
