Oakdale Mall Entrances to Be Redesigned for New Businesses

Major traffic pattern changes are in the works in the area of the Oakdale Mall in Johnson City.

The regional retail center that's operated for more than four decades is being rebranded as the Oakdale Commons. The property was acquired in January by Spark JC, a joint venture of the Matthews and Newman families, for $7.5 million.

The developers have not announced new tenants for the Oakdale Commons but at least two national restaurant chains are said to be planning to set up operations at the south end of the property.

Johnson City Mayor Martin Meaney said he believes the new owners "have a very aggressive schedule" in their project to transform the site to prepare for future businesses.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program Friday, Meaney said four outparcels are planned along the Harry L Drive section of the site. He said the developers haven't disclosed which companies are interested in using those sites.

Meaney said there are plans to reconfigure the entrances to the property off Harry L Drive. He said the eastern-most entrance is to be eliminated to improve traffic flow.

The mayor said vehicles entering and exiting at the south end of the mall would use the existing western entrance now equipped with a traffic signal. That entrance also allows access to the Wegman's store on Harry L Drive.

An entrance lane to the mall for westbound traffic is to be extended from there to Reynolds Road.

Meaney said the state Department of Transportation has been involved in developing the traffic pattern changes. He said a pair of left-turn lanes may be installed for westbound drivers to enter the Wegmans parking lot.

A DOT crew was taking measurements near the entrances to Wegmans and the mall on Friday.

It's not known when construction work for the new traffic pattern will get underway.
