National Wine Day was on May 25th, and a new study took a look at which wines people search for the most across the country, including here in New York.

New Yorkers Are Searching For Prosecco

Researchers at Joybird looked at five years of Google Trends data to find the most popular wine type in every state. They found that Prosecco was the top searched wine in New York and much of the Northeast. New England states also showed strong interest in Prosecco compared to other parts of the country.

Moscato And Merlot Dominated Nationwide

Prosecco was #1 in New York but the overall national results looked a little different. The study found that Moscato was the most searched wine overall, ranking first in 18 states.

Merlot came in close behind and ranked as the top searched wine in 17 states. Researchers found Moscato was especially popular throughout the Midwest and South, while Merlot dominated searches in many Western states.

Wine Preferences Can Say A Lot About A Region

The study showed that regional tastes reflect everything from climate and local food culture to social trends and entertaining habits. In New York, Prosecco’s popularity isn't a huge surprise.

The sparkling Italian wine is a favorite for brunches, celebrations, and get togethers because of its lighter taste and lower price compared to Champagne. Whether New Yorkers are pouring a glass at dinner, celebrating with friends, or just relaxing at home, sparkling wine is clearly having a moment in the Empire State.
