How New York State Is Paying Tribute to Korean and Vietnam War Veterans
Exciting news for veterans in New York State! The Division of Military and Naval Affairs has introduced special Korean War and Vietnam War Commemorative Medals, approved by the legislature and Governor Kathy Hochul in 2022. These medals are a way for New York to say "thank you" to the brave men and women who served in these wars.
Though the medals can't be worn on uniforms, they are a heartfelt gesture of appreciation from the state government. Major General Ray Shields, the Adjutant General of New York, expressed his pride in honoring the service of Korean and Vietnam War veterans through these medals.
You can apply for these special medals if you or a loved one served in Korea or Vietnam and are a current New York State resident. Just visit the Division of Military and Naval Affairs website at dmna.ny.gov/awards to fill out the application. Don't worry if you prefer paper - you can also mail in your application.
To prove your service, you'll need to submit a copy of your Department of Defense Form 214 (DD214) Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty. This confirms that you served in Korea or Vietnam.
Even if the veteran has passed away, family members or other designated individuals can apply for the medal on their behalf. It's important to the state that the sacrifices made by these heroes are never forgotten.
The Division of Military and Naval Affairs, overseeing the New York National Guard, New York Naval Militia, and more, is responsible for distributing these medals. They also manage the New York State Military Museum in Saratoga Springs, keeping alive the stories of our military history.
For more information on how to apply for the medals, visit the Division of Military and Naval Affairs website at dmna.ny.gov/awards.
