New York State Residents’ Perceived vs. Actual Childcare Costs
As a parent of three kids, I know that raising a child in New York State can be quite the experience, but have you ever wondered about the real cost of childcare?
The Perceived Cost Mismatch
There is a good chance that we'll have a few misconceptions about the actual cost of raising a child in the Empire State. A recent study showed that residents of the state, tend to underestimate the financial obligations of childcare.
The survey, which had over 2,100 participants all across the country, shed light on these misconceptions, covering expenses like day care, diapers, formula, food, and clothing.
Day Care Dilemma in the Empire State
Let's start with day care. New Yorkers, mostly underestimated the annual cost of day care for one infant by $8,368. Interestingly, this underestimation trend is seen only in our state but also across the nation, with the actual cost of day care being 10% higher than expected. Yikes!
Formula Faux Pas
Next up is baby formula. It appears that when it comes to the cost of powdered baby formula, New Yorkers and respondents from other states once again significantly underestimated the actual annual expenses, by 70%! The study found that New Yorkers thought the annual cost of formula to be around $2,287, but in reality, it was around $4,800. Yep, those tiny containers of formula cost more than we thought.
Taking a Step Back
So, when considering the total cost of a baby's first year, New Yorkers were expecting the cost to be around $8,368, while the actual cost stands at an incredible $22,111. That's 37% higher than what they thought they were going to have to pay.
