New York’s Got Game: We’re Basically Built for the Hall of Fame
New York isn’t just the Empire State but a MVP state too. According to The Sports Geek, New York ranks #6 overall when it comes to producing Hall of Famers from many sports. We’re not just talking about a couple legends, we’re talking about 141 Hall of Fame athletes who were born right here in the state.
What’s Our Strongest Sport?
Basketball. New Yorkers have a 1.7 in a million chance of ending up in the NBA Hall of Fame, which makes us the second most likely state in the country to do it. The Empire State has 34 NBA Hall of Famers. The only state that did better was Louisiana.
MLB? Also Strong
We’re tied in baseball too. 34 New Yorkers have been inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame, and we rank #12 overall for America’s pastime. Not bad for a state that’s basically frozen half the year.
We’re All Over the Map in Other Sports
NFL: We rank #34, with only 11 inductees total.
NHL: We’re #7 with 2 players. Apparently hockey isn’t where we shine, but we are getting better.
Soccer: Also #7, with 9 legends in the Hall.
WWE: We’re body slamming our way to #10 with 19 inductees.
Tennis: WOW—16 Hall of Famers from New York. We’re ranked #4. Who knew we had such a solid serve?
Boxing: Ranked #8 with 9 champs. Float like a New Yorker, sting like one too.
Golf: A little quieter on the green—we’re at #20 with 7 players inducted.
The Numbers Game
New Yorkers have a 7.1 out of 1 million chance of making it into a sports Hall of Fame. That puts us in the top 10 nationally. Whether it’s shooting hoops, swinging bats, serving aces, or landing body slams, New York has pumped out some serious legends.

While the Empire State came in 6th overall, our next-door neighbor Pennsylvania took the top spot. To see the top 10 US States with the most Hall of Fame athletes, go here.
