One Place in New York is Ending All Red Light Cameras, Why?
Suffolk County in New York has officially turned off their red light cameras! After causing controversy for over ten years, the red light cameras have been deactivated. It turns out that even though the red light cameras were supposed to improve safety, the number of accidents actually went up over the 14 years of the program.
Republican leaders are calling out the whole thing, saying the cameras were never about safety in the first place. Most of the tickets given out were for turning right on red violations - not exactly life-threatening stuff.
A recent court ruling said that the administrative fees attached to the red light camera tickets were illegal. Some people are even hoping to get back every dime they paid. People are questioning where all that ticket money really went to.
They wanted to know if it was being used for road improvements or going back into the schools. It doesn't take away all the sting but at least it would be going to a worthy cause.
So Suffolk County is waving goodbye to the whole red light camera debacle by not bringing it back. However there is a catch - Property taxes are expected to go up to make up for the lost revenue. And if you got a red light ticket before December 1st, 2024, you still have to pay it.
On the other hand, Nassau County has decided that they will stay with their red light camera program and plan on appealing the ruling. There you have it! Suffolk County is saying adios to their red light cameras, while Nassau County is standing their ground. Let's see what happens next and we hope that it NEVER comes to Broome County.
