Online scams are a growing problem across the country, and a new study suggests New Yorkers may face a higher risk than most. Researchers at DuelBits ranked all 50 states based on online scams, including cybercrime rates, online shopping habits, remote work, spam calls, and internet search trends.

New York ranked sixth overall, getting a vulnerability score of 66.46 out of 100. The study comes as the FBI reports that Americans lose about $16.6 billion each year to online scams.

Why New York Ranked So High

Several things put New York into the top 10. The state has a cybercrime rate of 177 incidents per 100,000 residents, one of the highest rates in the country. New Yorkers spend heavily online, which create more opportunities for scammers to target them.

Living Alone Can Increase Risk

One thing that stood out was the number of New Yorkers who live alone. 31% of New York residents live by themselves, tying the state for the third highest rate in the nation. Studies showed that people who live alone may be up to four times more likely to fall victim to an online scam. Isolation can make it easier for scammers to build trust with potential victims.

Dating and Romance Scams Remain a Concern

The study also found that New Yorkers frequently search for dating apps and online dating services. New York ranked fourth in the nation for searches related to apps like Tinder, Hinge, Grindr, and Match. Scammers use dating platforms to target victims and high usage of these services can increase the risk of romance scams.

Florida Ranked Number One

Florida was ranked as the state most vulnerable to online scams, followed by Maine, Colorado, Washington, and Nevada. New York came in sixth, ahead of New Hampshire, Iowa, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. At the other end of the list, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Oklahoma were found to be the least vulnerable.

How New Yorkers Can Protect Themselves

Experts say the best defense is staying alert. Be cautious about sharing personal information online, avoid clicking suspicious links, and never send money to someone you have only met online.
