Benefits Active Military and Veterans Qualify For In New York

We love our military members in the Southern Tier and we always encourage you to thank a vet when you meet one. It's nice to know that New York State also wants to say "thank you" by offering our military and veterans special benefits.

MyArmyBenefits, the official military benefits website of the U.S. Army, has benefits for Service members, Veterans, and their families that can be accessed anytime, not just for special occasions

It includes property tax exemptions, employment assistance, hunting and fishing licenses, New York State Parks privileges, and more. Eligibility for some of the benefits could depend on residency, military component, and Veteran disability status.

New York Military and Veterans Benefit

There is a New York State Division of Veterans' Services that have trained Veterans Benefit Advisors that can help and all their services are free of charge. They'll help Service members, retired Service members, Veterans and their families.

Did you know that a nonresident spouse that has the same state of residence as a nonresident service member, that is stationed in New York under military orders, is exempt from New York income taxes on wages that is earned in New York?

New York State Alternative Veteran Property Tax Exemption

New York is offering three different property tax exemptions for qualifying Veterans and their eligible family members. Here are the eligibility requirements for the New York Alternative Veterans Property Tax Exemption.

• You have to be a Veteran that served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces and got an honorable discharge.
• A spouse or unremarried surviving spouse of an eligible Veteran.Gold Star Parents of a service member that was killed while serving on active during the time of war.
• If the Veteran and their spouse are deceased, then the exemption can be passed on to their children or the Veteran's parents.
