This came up in a conversation that I had recently, so I decided to find out for myself. Are gas stations in New York required to have air pumps for your tires?

According to New York law, any dealer who owns or operates a gas station with four or more gas dispensing nozzles for the retail sale of motor fuels must have a functioning motor-driven air compressor capable of inflating automobile tires for use by customers during business hours.

In English, it means "yes, they do." So if you are in need of air for your car or truck tires in New York, they have to provide it. If a gas station owner purposely doesn't follow the rules, they could face a fine of up to $25 for every day they don't have the required air pumps.

This law makes sure that customers can find air pumps to fill up their tires in the Empire State. So if you are in need of air for your tires, it is good to know that you can stop by the nearest convenience store that offers gas and they will have the air that  you need for your tires.

I have to admit that after I heard about this, I've been checking every convenience store that I've stopped at and it seems to be true. Most of the stores don't offer it for free and they don't have too. However, I've found a few businesses (Byrne Dairy) that offer free air.
