Taking care of your teeth is about more than just a nice smile. It also helps protect your health. But a new study shows New York may not be keeping up when it comes to dental care.

Progress Is Happening, But Not Much Here

Across the country, it’s getting a little easier to see a dentist. There are fewer people per dentist now than there were five years ago. In New York, the improvement has been small. The number of people per dentist only dropped some, and the state ranked 46th overall for progress. That means most other states are improving faster.

Some Areas in New York Are Doing Better

Even though the state as a whole is behind, some counties are making real progress. Schuyler County saw the biggest improvement, meaning it’s becoming easier for people there to get dental care. Other counties like Seneca, Schoharie, Franklin, and Herkimer also showed strong gains.

Other Areas Are Falling Behind

At the same time, some counties are moving in the wrong direction. Delaware County had the least improvement, with access actually getting worse over time. Counties like Essex, Tioga, Otsego, and Columbia are also struggling to keep up.

Why This Matters for New Yorkers

When it’s harder to see a dentist, small problems can become bigger ones. That can affect not just your teeth, but your health too. This study shows that while things are improving nationwide, New York still has some catching up to do. If you’ve ever had trouble getting a dental appointment or had to wait longer than expected, this might explain why.
