January in New York Is Made for Comfort TV
If you live in New York, you know January can feel long and gray. The holidays are over, it gets dark early, and cold days keep a lot of us indoors. That is when many people turn on their favorite shows again, not for the first time, but for comfort. A new study says there is science behind why some shows feel better to watch when the winter blues hit.
Scientists Looked at What Makes a Show Feel Cozy
Researchers looked at 22 popular comfort TV shows and studied things like warm colors on screen, how positive the dialogue is, the speed of the theme song, and how long each episode lasts. They asked people how much happier each show made them feel.
Friends Takes the Top Spot
According to the study, Friends is the most comforting TV show of all time. Viewers said their happiness went up by almost 55 percent after watching it. The show scored high because of its warm lighting, upbeat conversations, and a theme song that starts every episode on a positive note. It also helps that many fans have watched the entire series again and again.

Other Favorites You Probably Know Well
Right behind Friends were Sex and the City and How I Met Your Mother. Both shows focus on friendships, everyday problems. Gilmore Girls and The Golden Girls also made the top five.
Some Shows Give the Biggest Mood Boost
While Friends ranked highest overall, the study found that Grey’s Anatomy and Gilmore Girls gave viewers the biggest happiness jump, both raising moods by nearly 60 percent. That may surprise some people since Grey’s Anatomy can be emotional, but fans say the friendships keep them coming back.
Frasier Wins for Best Binge Watching
If you like to let episodes play one after another while you relax or cook dinner, Frasier might be your go to, I know that it's my favorite. Viewers (including me) say they watched the full series more times than any other show in the study. Its familiar characters, and low stress storylines make it easy to watch without needing to pay attention to every detail. It's also very well written.
Why Comfort Shows Matter in New York Winters
For New Yorkers, winter means more nights at home, and waiting out snow, ice, and cold winds. Comfort TV becomes an important way to relax, feel happier, and break up long nights. Whether it is Friends, Gilmore Girls, Frasier, or any old favorite, the best comfort show is the one that helps you forget about the cold outside for a little while.
