If you’ve been watching all the national chatter around wages, job openings, and fair treatment at work, you’re not alone. Whether you're clocking in every day or job hunting, it’s hard not to wonder where New York really stands when it comes to worker wellbeing.

Well, now we know, thanks to a brand new study from Atticus that crunched a ton of data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and state labor departments. Spoiler alert: New York comes out looking pretty good.

New York Is #2 in the Nation for Workers

According to the study, New York ranks second overall out of all 50 states (plus D.C.) when it comes to being a great place for workers. The ranking looked at four big areas that really matter: salary, job market strength, workplace safety, and gender pay equity.

High Salaries Help Push NY Toward the Top

If you’re wondering why New York scored so high, salary plays a big part. The Empire State came in third in the country for average annual wages, right behind D.C. and Washington State. While the cost of living here can be steep, at least wages are helping to balance it out for many workers.

A Safer Place to Work Than You Might Think

Here’s something you might not expect: New York ranks 8th in the nation for workplace safety. So not only are workers getting paid well, but they’re also working in safer conditions compared to many other states.

Room to Improve in Gender Pay Equity

While the overall numbers are solid, the study also shows there’s still work to do. New York came in 16th for gender pay equity, which means we’re doing better than most but there’s still a gap to close.
