New Yorkers are known for having strong opinions about food, especially when it comes to bagels. A new study suggests that is not a stereotype. Trimi looked at food related search data from all 50 states and surveyed more than 1,000 Americans about the foods they crave most. New York’s top food craving was bagels.

New Yorkers Search for Bagels More Than Most

They found that New Yorkers search for bagels at a much higher rate than people across the country. 152 percent more of New York’s food craving searches were for bagels than the national average.

New York also ranked first in the country for overall food craving searches. The state had 84,394 food related craving searches for every 100,000 residents over the past year. That was over 3 times higher than Mississippi, which had the lowest rate.

Buffalo Made the List Too

New York was not the only local name to appear in the study. Buffalo ranked as the 19th most food obsessed city in the country. The ranking was based on searches for 21 different types of foods. Buffalo had 130,209 craving related searches for every 100,000 residents.

Americans Will Go Far for Food

The survey found that over 70 percent of Americans have ordered delivery or takeout even when they had food at home. More than one in three people said they had driven 30 minutes or more out of their way to get the food they wanted.

More than one in four said they had traveled to another city or state for a craving. Pizza was the food Americans said they found hardest to resist. But in New York, bagels are still the food people cannot stop thinking about.
