New York just hit a major milestone. Our state is now home to the 1,000th community in the nation to join the AARP Network of Age Friendly States and Communities. That’s a pretty big deal for residents of all ages.

What Age Friendly Really Means

Being an age friendly community is about making life easier for everyone, not just older adults. It means safer sidewalks, better public transportation, affordable housing, and public spaces that welcome kids, families, and seniors.

New York Communities Stepping Up

Across the state, 45 communities have already joined the network, including places like Albany, Erie County, Ithaca, and Rochester. Now, one more New York town has stepped in to help hit the 1,000 mark.

With nearly a quarter of its residents over the age of 60, this community is focused on improving housing, and walkability so people can comfortably “age in place.”

Local Leaders Are On Board

The mayor says joining the network lines up with the town’s long-term plan to make life better for residents. Becoming part of AARP’s network also means access to more resources, support, and ideas from other towns and cities doing the same work.

State Leaders Show Support

State leaders are celebrating this milestone, saying it proves New York is headed in the right direction when it comes to creating welcoming places for people of all ages. Programs already helping towns like this include Smart Growth, Downtown Revitalization, and other state initiatives.

Making Life Better for All

Nearly 40% of Americans now live in an “age-friendly” community, and the benefits are real. Older adults get better access to services, while younger residents enjoy safer streets and stronger connections with their community.

Creative Ideas Across the State

Plenty of New York towns are getting creative with their own projects:

Plattsburgh is offering free trishaw bike rides to reduce isolation for people 50+ and those with disabilities.

Rochester is running digital workshops to help older cancer patients feel confident using telemedicine and patient portals.

Westport is focusing on walkability and safety through traffic-slowing projects and crosswalk improvements.

A Growing Movement

Since it launched in 2012, the AARP Network of Age Friendly States and Communities has been expanding across the country. And with New York playing such a big role in this national milestone, it’s clear our state is helping lead the way.
