Long ago, in the 1600s, Jewish families in Poland created the very first bagels, and the round, tasty breads quickly became popular.

By the 1800s, as more Polish-Jewish people moved to America, they brought the bagel with them. Many settled in New York City, where they helped grow a thriving bagel-making community. In the early 1900s, the formation of Bagel Bakers Local 338 showed just how important bagels had become in the city's immigrant-led industry.

Rise to National Fame

Although bagels were initially popular in New York City, it wasn't until the mid-20th century that they reached national fame. The introduction of automation and bread-slicing technology made mass production more efficient, leading to the widespread availability of bagels across the country. Despite modern variations in flavors and toppings, the essence of the humble bagel has remained true to its 1600s roots.

Timeline of the Bagel

1300s - The modern bagel traces its roots back to the Polish obwarzanek. An obwarzanek krakowski is a bread in the shape of a braided ring that is boiled, sprinkled with salt, and topped with sesame or poppy seeds before baking.

1610 - Written records about bagels surface in Krakow, Poland.

Early 1900s - Bagel consumption rises in New York City.

1950s - Bagels become a breakfast staple nationwide, surpassing donuts in popularity.
