At least 416 people have been affected by job cuts at Maines Paper and Food Service in Broome County.

Maines officials will not comment publicly on the layoffs at the food distribution company which has operated a warehouse facility in the town of Conklin.

Information filed with the New York State Department of Labor indicates 119 employees lost their jobs this week because the sale of the company's broadline operations had not occurred.

According to the Maines filing, 297 people were furloughed in March because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Maines workers who lost their jobs this week received the bad news in an email on Sunday.

Some of the former employees are angered that Maines is ignoring its policy of providing compensation for vacation and sick time when workers leave the company.
