So, how about that late winter storm? Sure we northerners know that anything winter-like can and will happen up until Memorial Day. I can remember cloudy, rainy Memorial Day weekends with temperatures barely in the 40s. But I don't think many of us would have predicted a nasty winter storm like the one we just experienced.

The National Weather Service in Binghamton says this late-season snowfall broke the all-time April record for 2-day snowfall. Aren't you happy about that distinction? The NWS Binghamton website notes that as of 10 a.m.Tuesday, April 19th, the Binghamton airport snowfall measured at 14.2 inches over the two-day period. The record had been 13.6 inches on April 16th, 2007.

Remember last year when Binghamton scored the honor for another winter record? We won the Golden Snowball award for the most snowfall for the 2020-2021 season among five major New York State cities, and I believe we came in second for the most snowfall among communities in the Northeast U.S., just behind Caribou, Maine.

I almost take the blame for cursing us, as I was laughing at a picture I saw on social media last week of a report on heavy snow in South Dakota. Ouch. In addition to heavy, wet snow piled up at the end of my driveway, I have a cable wire down on my driveway, brought down by the weight of the heavy snow along with a huge tree branch that put quite a dent in my backyard fence. Obviously, I'm not the only one dealing with winter storm issues. At least I have power.

My snow shovels and snowblower had already been stored away for the season, and I was just about to do the same with my winter clothing. Maybe I should re-think that next year and wait until at least the month of April is over.
