300,000 Gallons of Water Lost in Johnson City Line Break

A Johnson City police officer spotted a powerful stream of water shooting into the air after an antiquated transmission line ruptured near a former Endicott Johnson factory.

Village water superintendent Jeff Clark said the problem on Helen Drive was discovered around 2:20 a.m. Tuesday.

A 16-inch line that once served the EJ complex at 59 Lester Avenue broke. Some water spilled onto Helen Drive but most flowed toward railroad tracks north of the building.

The broken line is located two blocks from St. James Church and school.

Clark estimated up to 300,000 gallons of water was lost as a result of the break. Crews were completing repairs shortly after noon.

Clark said water service was not disrupted to nearby homes and businesses.
