A teenager who allegedly tried to elude Johnson City police after smashing a stolen vehicle into a fence is being held in Broome County Jail.

Authorities say 19-year-old Derick Clark was found by officers laying on the ground as he tried to hide following the crash on Endicott Avenue.

Village police were notified Saturday night that a truck that had been stolen from the town of Triangle may have been in the area of Main Street.

Less than three hours later, an officer on patrol spotted the vehicle traveling on Willow Street.

Investigators say Clark turned off the truck's headlights and turned down Endicott Avenue. The vehicle hit a fence and came to a stop in an empty lot.

Police say Clark ran down an embankment into a wooded area near the railroad tracks. Officers caught up with him a short time later.

Clark has been charged with criminal possession of stolen property and obstructing governmental administration. He also had been wanted on a criminal contempt warrant issued by Johnson City village court.
