New York State Suddenly Cares About the Condition of These?

Did you know that New York State has begun collecting information using the condition of these?

Last week we told you that the next time you go and get your yearly vehicle inspection done be aware that New York State has added something to the checklist of things they look at when our vehicles undergo a safety inspection.

New York State Checking License Plates

Yearly safety inspections look at numerous safety-related things every year you have an inspection done but now it appears the state has begun asking inspection stations to include the registered vehicle's license plate condition in its report. Fox 5 first reported that the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (NYSDMV) has now added a new section of the inspection checklist that asks inspection stations to report the condition of both the front and rear license plates of the car being inspected.

After the inspector determines the condition of the license plates (good, bad, other) they will send that information back to the NYSDMV. No matter what condition a plate is in will have NO impact on whether the vehicle passes or fails the inspection.

Why Have License Plates Become Part of Safety Inspections in New York?

The license plate inspections were added to safety inspection in June 2023 to gather data and to get an idea about how many plates are peeling, damaged, or defaced across New York State. The addition also comes as New York attempts to curb people from altering, covering, and/or shielding their plate numbers so they go undetected when they drive on any road or bridge that has a toll. In some cases, altered plates can lead to a vehicle also going undetected by red lights and traffic cameras.
