Construction crews are remodeling a town of Union office building for the new quarters for the Endwell state police substation.

The site is located next door to the primary town office facility on East Main Street.

Work on the $2 million project to update and floodproof the building began recently.

State police operations will be moved to the lower level of the building in preparation for the relocation of town of Union court operations to the upper level.

In recent years, the town of Union court has been located in the Johnson City village justice building.

Town Supervisor Robert Mack said the project cost includes floodproofing work that also will be done at the main office building.

Mack said the state police station will occupy slightly less space than the agency currently is using but it will have a more efficient design. A garage also is to be added for use by the state police.

The state police section of the building upgrade is scheduled to be complete in December. The court area is expected to be finished in February.

Mack said rent, utilities and other costs associated with the operating the court at the Johnson City site total nearly $60,000 a year. That expense was a primary reason for the decision to move the court back into a town-owned building.

Early last year, town of Union officials suggested the state police might have to leave the Endwell building.

At one point during lease negotiations, a state police official put out a statement indicating the agency was considering "other local municipalities for a possible location of a new station."

Ultimately, the town and state police reached an agreement on a plan to keep the station at the current site. Mack said the new state police setup in the building is designed to provide "exactly what they need."
