The company that operates Price Chopper supermarkets has been converting many of its locations into a new format with a new name - Market 32 - over the past decade.

There now are 51 Market 32 stores but none of them are in the Binghamton area. Price Chopper has locations in Binghamton, Endicott, Chenango Bridge, Owego and Montrose.

When the Market 32 concept was announced 11 years ago, the company said the upgraded stores would "offer a more modern grocery shopping experience." The announcement indicated Market 32 would include "a more convenient and intuitive store layout."

The "Market 32" name has popped up in some spots at local Price Chopper stores but there apparently are no current plans to redesign the locations.

A spokesperson at Market 32/Price Chopper headquarters in Schenectady said the company continually evaluates "how our stores can best serve our local communities."

In an email, the spokesperson said that includes "investing in remodeling and converting Price Chopper stores to Market 32s where there is a demand for it." While the company anticipates opening more Market 32 stores "in the years to come," she provided no schedule as to changes to the Binghamton-area locations.

The company now operates 78 Price Chopper stores and one location called Market Bistro.

Price Chopper opened its first store in Broome County in December 1987 in a shopping center on Glenwood Avenue in Binghamton. The original store was replaced with a new building in the same plaza in February 2012.
