
Four-Vehicle Pileup In Interstate 81 Work Zone
According to a report from New York State Police Troop C, troopers responded on Wednesday, August 18, 2026, to a crash on Interstate 81.
Multi-Vehicle Crash
On Wednesday, troopers arrived at the crash scene involving several vehicles on Interstate 81 South in the Town of Barker near the Castle Creek Exit 21.

During the preliminary investigation, New York State Troopers determined that, while traveling through an active work zone, a tractor-trailer struck a vehicle, pushing it into a third vehicle. The third vehicle rolled and struck a fourth vehicle.

Dogs Missing After Crash
The report noted that four people, one occupant from each vehicle, were transported to UHS Wilson Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
Troopers also reported that two dogs that were inside one of the vehicles ran from the scene. The dogs were described as a German Shepard and a poodle-type dog. They were last seen in the area along Interstate 81 and Route 11.
New York State Troopers noted that no persons from the worksite sustained injuries, and no work zone vehicles were damaged. Interstate 81 south was shut down for a short time during initial response but was reopened to traffic after several minutes.

A New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Spill Response team responded to the scene for a fuel spill from the tractor-trailer. The investigation is ongoing.
