The Binghamton Rumble Ponies left New Jersey last week and headed to Richmond, Virginia, to take on the Flying Squirrels for their second road trip six-game series in a row.

Tuesday, May 19 - Rumble Ponies - 10  Flying Squirrels - 7

Binghamton stormed back for a four-run comeback victory to beat the Richmond Flying Squirrels 10-7 from CarMax Park. It was just Richmond’s third home loss of the season.  The Rumble Ponies scored 10 runs for the second straight game, and a pinch-hit RBI single for Wyatt Young gave them the 10-7 lead in the top of the ninth inning. Binghamton also tallied 11 hits. Binghamton’s comeback was bolstered in the top of the fourth inning when they smacked back-to-back home runs for the first time this season.

Eli Serrano III hit his second Double-A home run, D’Andre Smith in his first game back since April 18, JT Schwartz hit his first home run of the year, and Nick Lorusso has three homers in his last six games.

Wednesday, May 20 - Flying Squirrels - 7  Rumble Ponies - 6

The Rumble Ponies led all night, but fell in walk-off fashion to the Richmond Flying Squirrels. The Flying Squirrels have 15 comeback wins this year and 10 wins when trailing into the eighth inning. In the bottom of the ninth inning, right fielder Ty Hanchey delivered a game-tying solo home run to lead off the inning against Binghamton right-hander Saul Garcia. The designated hitter, Jack Payton, followed with a walk and was bumped to second on a sacrifice bunt from shortstop Zane Zielinski. With two outs, Parks Harber delivered the walk-off single to win it 7-6 for Richmond.

Jacob Reimer tallied his seventh multi-hit game, JT Schwartz has five RBI and two HR in the series, and Nick Lorusso has an eight-game hit streak.

Thursday, May 21 - Rumble Ponies - 9  Flying Squirrels - 2

Binghamton used a seven-run ninth inning in the rain to storm past Richmond, Thursday night, leading the series 2-1 and accounting for two of Richmond’s four home losses. In the ninth inning, in the pouring rain, Richmond and Binghamton were tied at 2-2 until the Rumble Ponies took advantage of the weather to take a 9-2 lead.

Center fielder D’Andre Smith gave Binghamton the lead 4-2 on a sacrifice fly to the center fielder Bo Davidson, who dropped the ball, and it scored two runs. In the inning, Richmond right-handers Mitch White and Dylan Hecht walked six batters, hit two batters, and eight consecutive hitters reached base. Binghamton scored seven runs on one hit in the inning.

The bottom of the eighth inning is when Richmond tied the game at 2-2 behind a two-run double from left fielder Parks Harber. Right-hander Douglas Orellana surrendered two hits and two runs in the frame.

Eli Serrano III tallied his 14th extra-base hit, Marco Vargas recorded his sixth multi-hit game, Jacob Reimer stroked his fourth double over his last seven games, D’Andre Smith had the go-ahead sacrifice fly, and R.J. Gordon set a season best for innings pitched, hits, runs, and strikeouts.

Friday, May 22 - Flying Squirrels - 10  Rumble Ponies - 5

The Rumble Ponies fell behind early and couldn’t recover as they fell to Richmond Flying, tying the series at 2-2. The Flying Squirrels flooded the bases in the second and third innings to take a 3-0 lead.

In the second inning against the right-hander Jordan Geber, Richmond scored two runs off a sacrifice fly from catcher Adrian Sugastey, which also resulted in a throwing error into the third base dugout from center fielder Jose Ramos.

Then in the second inning, Richmond walked twice and stole two bases and advanced on a past ball and a wild pitch to score their third run on an eventual RBI single from center fielder Bo Davidson. Geber went 3.0 innings, walking three batters as three runs scored, but only one was earned.

Left-hander Greg Farone left in the fifth inning with the lead after being dealt the loss over his last four starts. He finished allowing one run across three hits while walking three and striking out five. Richmond scored two more runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to take an 8-1 lead over Binghamton.

Nick Lorusso extended his on-base streak to 11 games and has hit four home runs on this road trip; Eli Serrano III tallied his 15th extra-base hit, and Jefry Yan has now gone his last 8.2 innings scoreless.

Saturday, May 23 - Flying Squirrels - 5  Rumble Ponies - 1

Binghamton hit their seventh home run of the series, but fell behind early, and the  Flying Squirrels held on to a 5-1 win from CarMax Park. Right-hander Brendan Girton struggled, walking seven batters over 2.2 innings. In the third inning, he allowed all five of his earned runs to give Richmond a 5-0 lead.

Four of the first six batters of the inning reached base off three walks and one hit-by-pitch. Second baseman Zane Zilenski highlighted the inning with a two-run double, which took Girton out of the game.

Over the first two innings, both Binghamton and Richmond stranded the bases loaded. Richmond left 11 on base, and Binghamton left nine on base tonight.  The Rumble Ponies got on the board to make it 5-1 in the top of the fourth as second baseman Nick Lorusso continued his power surge with his third home run of the series. Lorusso has seven homers this season and five over the last 10 games.

Nick Lorusso extended his on-base streak to 12 games and has hit five home runs over his last 10, and Vincent Perozo chalked up his first multi-hit game and reached base in all four plate appearances.

Sunday, May 24 - Rumble Ponies - 2  Flying Squirrels - 1

Binghamton handed Richmond their first home series split of the year, and used two home runs to pull past the Flying Squirrels) 2-1 from CarMax Park. Richmond is now 19-5 at home with three losses by way of the Rumble Ponies. 

In the bottom of the ninth inning in front of 9,000 fans, Richmond had runners on second and third base with two outs in a 2-1 game. Binghamton left-hander Felipe De La Cruz put runners on second and third with two down in the inning, and on a 3-2 count, he got the left fielder Ty Hanchey to fly out to end the game. De La Cruz struck out three in 1.1 innings and got the save.

Binghamton used a powerful seventh inning, depositing two home runs to take a 2-0 lead, which was the difference in the game. To lead off the frame, right fielder Jose Ramos smashed his seventh home run of the season off right-hander Shane Rademacher. Then two batters later, third baseman Nick Lorusso hit a solo shot again off Rademacher, who did not finish the inning.

Lorusso hit seven homers last season and now has eight in the first half of this season. He has hit six homers over his last 11 games and sent four over the fence against Richmond. Binghamton hit nine home runs in the six-game series with Richmond. Right-hander Bryce Conley sent in his best outing of the season for Binghamton, pitching 5.0 scoreless innings while striking out five.
