“Pray 4 Gaza” Graffiti Scrawled Around Downtown Binghamton
Binghamton police are trying to find the person responsible for a wave of downtown vandalism discovered by business owners on Columbus Day.
A red spray-painted "Pray for Gaza" message was scrawled on a city-owned parking garage and at least three buildings.
The vandalism was spotted early Monday as world leaders hailed the Gaza peace deal.
Police were called to the Centre Plaza complex at Henry and Chenango streets just before 8:30 a.m. to investigate the graffiti painted at the base of the eight-story structure. The former office building is being converted into student housing.
Similar vandalism was observed on the Washington Street side of the parking garage at 7 Hawley Street, one block west of City Hall.
A wall on the Water Street side of a building that had been home to the Old World Deli across from Boscov's department store also was defaced.
Volunteers were busy setting up tables near the building Monday morning for the Italian food festival that follows Binghamton's Columbus Day parade.
White paint covered graffiti that had been sprayed on the nearby Merrill Lynch building a 2 Court Street.
Binghamton police detective Captain Cory Minor told WNBF News Monday afternoon that no arrests had been made in connection with the downtown vandalism.
