Binghamton Parking Garage Apartment Complex Still Possible
The new 500-space city-owned parking garage in downtown Binghamton next to Boscov's department store is now fully open.
While the $25 million five-story parking facility at Water and Henry streets is completed, there remains the possibility that a housing project might eventually be developed above the structure.
City officials initially had pushed for development of a 120-unit market-rate apartment complex on top of the garage.
That plan was scrapped after the Binghamton City School District board unanimously rejected a tax break package for what was expected to be a $60 million project.
Mayor Jared Kraham told WNBF News the redesigned facility "left open the possibility of again exploring the construction of residential units above the parking garage."
The mayor said "this is a shovel-ready site in downtown Binghamton" for a new residential project.
Now that the garage has been built, Kraham said the city "will reengage the development community and see if someone is willing to come in and build on top."
The mayor said having parking available below an apartment complex would make the location attractive for different types of residential development.
