Binghamton detectives say a man shot his wife multiple times, started a fire in their home and then shot himself.

Police were sent to 56 Howard Avenue around 4:15 p.m. Saturday to investigate a report of shots fired and smoke coming from the single-family residence.

When officers arrived, they discovered an active fire inside the home. Minutes later, firefighters found a man and woman with life-threatening injuries inside the house.

The two were taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, where they were pronounced dead.

Police investigators identified the couple as 64-year-old Patrick Angeline and 62-year-old Wanda Angeline.

Detectives said they have determined that Patrick Angeline shot his wife "multiple times" and started a fire in the home. He later shot himself inside the residence.

A neighbor had reported hearing what sounded like an explosion or gunshot before noticing smoke coming from the Angeline home.

A sign posted on a door near the garage advised visitors to "Beware of the Dog." Police did not indicate whether a dog or any other animals were found inside the house.

Investigators have classified the case as a "domestic incident." It remains under investigation.
