People using the new downtown Binghamton parking garage now have a quick way to enter the neighboring Boscov's department store.

The long-awaited covered walkway linking the 500-space parking structure to the business was opened for use without any fanfare on Monday.

The street level of the garage opened just before Thanksgiving to make a few dozen spaces available for the holiday shopping season.

All five floors of the parking facility have been in operation since mid-March. While the structure has been fully open for four months, work continued on some of the finishing touches for the garage.

It's now only about 60 steps between the store and the parking complex. A steel gate at the garage end of the walkway can be lowered when Boscov's is closed.

A small street-level commercial space is located on the northeast corner of the parking garage.

The city is planning to seek proposals for the use of the space which is located across the street from the DoubleTree hotel.
