Abandoned Downtown Binghamton Buildings Demolished
Three more vacant structures have been torn down in a blighted downtown Binghamton neighborhood.
Gorick Construction crews began demolishing two abandoned apartment buildings on Fayette Street before moving on to another site at 12 Rutherford Street.
Gorick is being paid $170,000 to remove the abandoned structures that were owned by the city.
Mayor Jared Kraham said they were "some of the most blighted and dangerous properties" in Binghamton.
Kraham said the buildings previously had been owned by "notorious slumlord Isaac Anzaroot." The city took control of the properties as part of a legal settlement with Anzaroot.
The mayor said the abandoned buildings were "a nuisance to the neighborhood" because they attracted squatters and criminal activity. He said half of the cost of tearing down the structures will be paid for using money from a state grant.
Kraham said removing the structures will permit the properties to be considered for future development.
Five other buildings acquired as part of the Anzaroot deal were demolished earlier this year.
