For most of us, It sure is nice to have gas prices below $2.00 a gallon in the Southern Tier.  While the average gas price in New York State is $1.95, HAWK gas spotters have found gas priced as low as $1.81 in the Binghamton area and as high as $2.08.  My brother paid $1.27 at a gas station in Virginia today.  And that's without a rewards card.

So why are gas prices so much more in New York State, especially upstate?  One word -tax!  The gas tax takes another 50 cents a gallon out of your wallet.  Traditionally, Buffalo and Rochester pay higher pump prices than Binghamton, Syracuse and Albany but not by much.  See the breakdown of gas tax in the US right HERE.

So what can be done?  I like to shop at grocery stores or gas stations that give you gas rewards.  Price Chopper, Weis and Speedway offer gas rewards in the Binghamton area.  Other than that, Gas Buddy from NewYorkStateGasPrices.org is a good source to reference variable gas stations and are good about updating pump prices for that day.  It's a good idea to bookmark it if you do a lot of traveling.  You can access Gas Buddy HERE.

Safe travels to you!
