Do You Have The Stomach For Smoked Eel From Hancock, New York?
Recently I had a conversation with a friend of mine about what we would and wouldn't eat. Anyone that knows me, knows that I'm willing to try almost everything. I even tried dried maggots on the air as an experiment once.
One question that he asked me was "would you eat eel?" I have to admit that I never really thought about it before but my first thought was "NO WAY!" It sounded a little repulsive to me but my friend assured me that it was better than it sounds.
Then he told me about a gentleman by the name of Ray Turner out of Hancock. I admitted I hadn't heard of him and after I looked him up, I'm surprised that I haven't. Talk about living under a rock.
Smoked Eel From Hancock
Ray owns Delaware Delicacies and I've been told that it's a small shop off a dirt road in a forest. That is my kind of establishment, a place in the middle of nowhere that everyone knows about...except me until now.
Turner traps, brines, and then smokes the eels over applewood. I think the best chance of getting me to try the eel is to blindfold me first so that I can't see it. Smoked eel not your thing?
Turner also sells other smoked foods like trout, shrimp, and salmon, now that sounds more appetizing. I love taking road trips in the summer and I'm putting Delaware Delicacies in Hancock on my traveling bucket list. I can't wait to meet the man with the long white beard
Here's my question to you: Do you have the stomach to eat eels?
