After more than eight decades, the Ellis Brothers store on Washington Street in downtown Binghamton is quiet.

The family-owned business has moved all of its retail operations to its new location on Court Street.

The store at 159 Washington Street opened for business on September 9, 1936. In recent weeks, most of the merchandise in the building was moved to the new site.

Ellis Brothers Furniture started operations in the former J.C. Penney building at 26 Court Street in June.

Tom Ellis, one of the owners, said things are going well at the new location. He said some adjustments continue to be made in the recently-renovated building.

Ellis said the Washington Street building will be sold. He said it's under contract for sale, although he declined to identify the prospective buyer.

It's expected the street level of the property will continue to be used for retail purposes. The upper floors of the four-story building likely would be converted to apartments.
