A veteran crossing guard was seriously hurt when she was struck by a car while on the job on East Main Street in front of Union-Endicott High School.

The guard was admitted to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse after she sustained a broken pelvis. Endicott police chief Patrick Garey said she was hit by the vehicle on Monday.

The incident happened three days after workers with the New York State Department of Transportation installed new school zone speed limit signs. The speed limit is 20 mph from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on school days.

Dozens of speeding drivers have been stopped by police over the past few days and warned about the reduced speed limit.

Union-Endicott school superintendent Nicole Wolfe said the district worked with Mayor Linda Jackson and the police department over the past year or so for a lower speed limit near the high school.

Wolfe said more students now are in the area of the high school with the recent expansion of in-person learning. Motorists also should be alert to students who may going to and from school around lunch time.
