Endicott police say a driver was taken to a hospital after he allegedly ran a stop sign in a stolen vehicle and smashed into a car following a chase.

Authorities say 54-year-old Purnell McCall of Endicott faces several charges in connection with the incident.

According to a village police news release, a vehicle was reported stolen from a gas station on North Street around 7:50 p.m. Sunday.

The operator of the car left it running with the keys inside while she went inside the store to pay for her gasoline. When she went back outside, she discovered the car was missing and called police.

About 50 minutes later, a village police officer spotted the stolen vehicle stopped on Cleveland Avenue near Monroe Street. The car raced off when the officer activated emergency lights on the patrol car.

Police say the officer went after the vehicle for about two minutes before ending the pursuit while on Oak Hill Avenue.

Moments later, the stolen car went through a red light at the intersection of Oak Hill Avenue and Pine Street. It collided with a vehicle driven by Jennifer Waletzki of Endicott. She was not hurt.

Police say McCall lost control of the car after the crash. It came to a stop in the front yard of a home in the 400 block of Oak Hill Avenue.

McCall was evaluated at Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City. He then was taken to the central arraignment facility at Broome County Jail in the town of Dickinson.
