With all the flash flooding that we've been having lately in New York, it’s a good idea to think about how to keep our pets safe when the weather turns nasty. Best Friends Animal Society, a well known animal rescue group, is sharing some easy tips to help you get ready for emergencies like floods.

Flash floods can happen fast, and pets can get scared or even run off if you’re not prepared. Sharon from Best Friends says the key is planning ahead so your pets don’t get lost if you have to leave in a hurry.

Update Your Pet’s ID and Vaccines

Make sure your pet has a microchip with your current phone number and address, and keep their vaccines up to date. This helps keep them healthy and means they can get into a shelter if needed.

Pack a Go Bag for Quick Evacuations

It’s good to have a “go bag” packed and ready to go if you have to leave quickly. The bag should include your pet’s vaccination papers, any medications they need for at least a week, food and water for a few days, along with familiar things like their favorite toys or a blanket. Don’t forget a leash, collar with ID, and a crate to keep them safe while you’re on the move. If you have a cat, bring a litter box too.

Get a Pet First Aid Kit Ready

Vet clinics might be hard to reach during a storm, so it’s a good idea to have a pet first aid kit ready. It should have bandages, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, and a flashlight.

Plan for Backup Care and Shelters

Think about what happens if you can’t take care of your pet during the emergency. Talk to friends or family you trust and let them know your pet’s routine and needs. It’s also good to check out pet-friendly hotels or shelters nearby ahead of time, so you’re not scrambling if you have to leave.

Take Photos to Help Find Your Pet if Lost

Take good photos of your pets and save them on your phone and computer, and maybe print a few copies. If your pet gets separated from you, having a recent picture makes it easier to find them.
