Crews are using heavy equipment as a project gets underway to remove a large section of an old building at the UHS Wilson Medical Center campus in Johnson City.

Demolition operations started near where a parking garage collapsed on 2015. The project site is located between Baldwin and Arch streets.

A UHS representative said about 75 percent of the Picciano Building is to be taken down. The demolition work at the building is expected to start next month.

Preparation work for the demolition project began several weeks ago. Structural steel was installed to shore up the section of the building that will remain.

The exterior of the structure will receive a facelift, as will the existing walkway between the Picciano Building and the main hospital complex.

The remodeled building will include a cafeteria, kitchen and additional offices.

The project is being undertaken in conjunction with an overall Wilson modernization initiative.
