Sheriff Craig DuMond says the Amsterdam Police got a report of a person getting a call from someone saying they were a Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputy threatening the resident was going to jail because of a warrant for IRS violations and identity theft.  The caller told the woman she had to purchase gift cards from places like Home Depot, Walmart and Target and give the numbers over the phone to avoid arrest.

Sheriff DuMond says, even though the scam was in Montgomery County, he’s concerned it could pop up elsewhere.

The Sheriff advises that no one associated with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office will solicit any financial information or seek funds over the phone.

Residents should never provide personal information to anyone over the phone.

Anyone with questions or concerns should contact their local law enforcement agency.
