The time between Memorial Day and Labor Day is called the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer” because of the sharp rise in serious crashes involving teen drivers. Safety experts are warning drivers across New York to stay alert as summer travel ramps up.

Distracted Driving Continues To Cause Serious Crashes

WhistleOut took a look and found that distracted driving caused 174 deaths and injuries in New York during the most recent year. They ranked New York 37th overall among states most impacted by distracted driving crashes. Distracted driving has caused more than 6,100 injuries and deaths every year across the nation.

Phones Remain One Of The Biggest Problems

Researchers say using a cellphone behind the wheel remains one of the leading causes of distracted driving crashes. WhistleOut surveyed 1,000 Americans and found 17% admitted using their phones while driving. That number was higher among younger drivers, with about 1 in 5 Gen Z and millennial drivers saying they use phones while driving.

May Is Considered The Deadliest Month

The report found that May is the deadliest month for distracted driving crashes nationwide. Warmer weather, increased travel, road trips, and teen drivers being out of school contributed to the spike in crashes.

Distracted Driving Affects Drivers Of All Ages

While younger drivers are a major focus during the “100 Deadliest Days,” researchers say distracted driving affects every age group. The study found 15% of fatal distracted driving crashes involved drivers age 20 or younger. Another 23% involved drivers over age 65.

Drivers should use hands free systems, silence notifications, set navigation before driving, and avoid looking at phones while behind the wheel. Taking your eyes off the road for a moment can have deadly consequences on busy New York roads.
