Broome County District Attorney Stephen Cornwell has announced he will not seek re-election.

Cornwell issued a statement Friday morning revealing his decision not to run for another four-year term.

Cornwell was the Republican candidate who defeated long-time Democratic district attorney Gerald Mollen in a close race in November 2015.

In his announcement, Cornwell said he decided not to seek re-election "after much thought and deliberation."

His statement said "it would be dishonest to run for another four-year term, which I do not intend to complete, or, to exploit the power of the District Attorney's Office to advance personal gains."

In the message addressed to "the residents of Broome County," Cornwell said "I will continue to work for you through the end of the year, then pass on to my successor the best possible team and playbook to continue this mission - to bring even safer streets and an even brighter future to our community."

The 46-year-old Cornwell Friday afternoon declined to discuss what he may do after he leaves office at the end of the year. He said "things are going well" in the office and "we have a great team" in place.

Cornwell will discuss his decision not to run for a second term on WNBF's Binghamton Now program at 10:30 Monday morning.
