Work has started on a long-planned project on the old IBM Country Club property in the town of Union.

Crews from Gorick Construction of Binghamton this month are extending a flood protection levee in the Fairmont Park neighborhood.

The work is being done along Barton Avenue, just north of Watson Boulevard.

The levee is being modified to match the height of an existing floodwall and road closure system. The construction work is being performed on the western edge of the former IBM Country Club site. The $274,000 levee extension project is nearing completion.

Planning director Sara Zubalsky-Peer said this is the last major flood protection project currently in the works for the town of Union.

During a public hearing, the owners of Traditions at the Glen golf course expressed concerns that the Army Corps of Engineers might mandate changes in the facility in the future.
