One of my favorite shows is Chicago Med and in one of the episodes, the husband of a patient forgot that he had his gun in his pants. There is a joke there but I'm going to leave it alone. Anyway, the doctor told him he had to leave or go put the gun back in his car.

The husband said it was ok to have it because he had a concealed carry permit. The doctor said that didn’t matter because it’s a felony to have a gun in a hospital. So is that really true, can you have a concealed gun in a hospital especially in New York?

It comes as no surprise that there are some tight restrictions on where you can carry your gun in New York State. Especially around places like schools, government buildings, parks, etc.

But what if you're a licensed gun owner who works at a hospital? It turns out there are some exceptions to these location restrictions. For example, according to Giffords Law Center, security guards who have a special armed registration card can carry their firearms while on the job. It's good to know that a hospital can have armed security..

Police officers, peace officers, retired police officers, active-duty military personnel, and people with written consent to carry a firearm for the purposes of natural resource protection and management are all exempt from these restrictions too.

With that being said, it's important to know that while these groups are exempt from location restrictions, they are still have to obey other gun laws in New York. The bottom line is that it's good to know that the hospitals have options when it comes to armed security. This is especially good news for the safety of the patients and the hospital staff.
