June is Men's Health Month, and health experts across New York are encouraging men to make their health a priority. Whether you're a father, grandfather, husband, brother, son, or friend, taking care of your health is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and the people who care about you.

Colorectal Cancer Affects Thousands of New Yorkers Each Year

Every year, about 4,700 men in New York are diagnosed with colorectal cancer. More than 1,400 men in the state lose their lives to the disease annually. The good news is that colorectal cancer is often preventable through screening. When caught early, it is also highly treatable. Health experts recommend that adults at average risk begin colorectal cancer screenings at age 45.

Screening Can Catch Problems Before Cancer Starts

One of the biggest benefits of colorectal cancer screening is that it can find precancerous polyps before they turn into cancer. Screenings can also detect cancer in its early stages, when treatment is often more successful. For many men, a screening appointment could make a life-changing difference.

Prostate Cancer Is Also a Major Concern for Men

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among men in New York. Doctors encourage men to talk with their healthcare providers about their personal risk factors, including family history.

Fear and Embarrassment Keep Some Men From Getting Help

According to the Cancer Services Program, some men avoid screenings because they feel nervous, embarrassed, or believe they should simply "tough it out." Health professionals say those feelings are common, but they should not stop anyone from getting preventive care. Asking questions can help make the process less stressful.

Free Screening Help May Be Available

For some uninsured and underinsured New Yorkers, free colorectal cancer screening and diagnostic services may be available through the Cancer Services Program. The program may also help connect eligible patients with treatment resources if cancer is diagnosed.
