The Broome County Division of Solid Waste Management is continuing its tradition of providing free Christmas tree recycling services for residents.

Those who drop off their Christmas trees at the Landfill can expect them to be chipped and composted on-site. The resulting compost will later be distributed to residents at no cost in the spring for their landscaping needs. Similarly, trees brought to the NYSDEC location in Kirkwood will also be collected and chipped, with the resulting mulch used along hiking trails in parks.

Reminders for Christmas Tree Recycling

To ensure smooth recycling procedures, it is important to remove all lights, tinsel, ornaments, and any other decorations before dropping off trees for recycling. The recycling services for real Christmas trees will be available at designated locations from December 26, 2024, to January 31, 2025. For those with faux (plastic) Christmas trees, disposal as regular garbage can be done at the Broome County Landfill.

Convenient Drop-Off Locations and Drop-Off Times

Residents interested in recycling their Christmas trees can conveniently drop them off at designated locations with specific timings.

The Broome County Landfill, located at 286 Knapp Road in Binghamton, NY, accepts Christmas trees for recycling from Monday to Friday, between 7 a.m. and 2:45 p.m., and on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Another option is the NYSDEC location in Kirkwood at 1679 Route 11, Kirkwood, NY, where Christmas trees can be dropped off for recycling during the week, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

It's important to note that Grippen Park will not serve as a drop-off location for Christmas tree recycling this season.
