Chenango and Tompkins Counties are now at new COVID infection rates where the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending even vaccinated people go back to wearing masks indoors.

21 of the 62 counties in New York are at the seven-day positivity rate where masking is recommended.  Broome County is not on the substantial spread list yet. Onondaga County is also listed under substantial spread.

Several counties have indicated they are in discussions about how to move forward, but none of the governments have apparently committed to requiring a return to mask-wearing.

The new CDC daily tracker shows hotspots of infection with at least 50 new cases per 100,000 residents over the past seven days or a test positivity rate of eight percent or more.

While many areas of New York State are in the moderate or substantial designations, areas downstate: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island and Nassau County are listed as high transmission rate with 100 new cases or more per 100,000 people.

The only areas listed as low transmission in New York are Yates, Allegany and Genesee Counties.

While no guidance is coming so far from local governments, many residents are reacting on their own to the emergence of the Delta variance.  Observers have noticed what appears to be an increase number of shoppers in more crowded retail outlets wearing masks in recent days.
