As Upstate New York Grieves Arthur Jones, New Reports Hint at Cause of Death
Arthur Jones wasn’t just another name on a football roster to the people in the Southern Tier, he was one of us. A Union-Endicott kid who made it from our own backyards all the way to a Super Bowl win, and he carried that Southern Tier pride everywhere he went. Losing him at just 39 feels personal for a lot of people in this area.
From UE Grad to Super Bowl Champion
Even if you never met Arthur, you probably knew his story. He grew up right here, went to UE, played college ball at Syracuse, and then got drafted by the Ravens. That alone was huge. Then he helped them win a Super Bowl, which made everyone back home point at the TV and say, “That’s our guy.” He went on to play for the Colts and Washington, but no matter where he was, he never stopped being the hometown kid.
What We Know About Jones' Sudden Passing
According to Syracuse.com, 911 records reveal that emergency responders were called after Jones' medical device triggered at his home. The calls indicate that the device, likely a defibrillator, activated before the fatal incident, prompting paramedics and police to rush to the scene. While those dispatch logs don’t confirm a definitive cause of death, they hint at what may have led to his sudden passing.

Off the Field, Jones Made the Deepest Impact
What people keep talking about is who he was off the field: his energy, that big smile, how he treated the people around him. Former coaches and teammates have been sharing memories and messages, and it’s all the same theme: he was the kind of guy you were glad to know. And for those of us in the Southern Tier, he was more than a headline. He was proof that a kid from Union-Endicott could make it big and stay grounded. He showed what was possible and made people here proud without ever needing to say a word.
Jones Leaves Behind a Son and a Family Still in the Spotlight
Arthur leaves behind his son, Arthur Jones IV, who’s a sophomore defensive lineman at Christian Brothers Academy. He also leaves behind a family this community has cheered for over the years, including his brothers Chandler and Jon, who made their own names in football and the UFC.

A Loss That Hits Home for the Southern Tier
The passing of Arthur Jones isn’t just sad, it’s a real loss for this area. This community watched him grow up, cheered for him on Sundays, and claimed him as one of our own long after his NFL days were done. When someone like that is gone too soon, it hits differently. Arthur Jones may have played on some of the biggest stages in the country, but to us, he’ll always be the hometown star from UE who made us proud.
